Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Although Schubert wrote in many genres, it is his composition of the German art song (Lied) that places him as one of the significant composers of the Romantic Era. Schubert composed over 600 lieder before his early death, most of which are comprised of lyrical melodies and dramatic, chromatic harmonies. Schubert's mastery of the poetic line makes his music ideal for the vocalist. Schubert did not achieve success during his lifetime; however, significant pieces and song cycles such as Die Winterreise, Erlkonig, and Trout Quintet remain standard in music repertoire.
