Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

Best known for his compelling motives and full sonority, Johannes Brahms was greatly influenced by Beethoven. Much like Beethoven, Brahms pushed the boundaries of classical composition by incorporating chromatic harmony and modulations to distantly related keys. Brahms is one of the few composers of the Romantic period who was regarded as an important composer during his lifetime. His works include such masterpieces as his four symphonies, Ein deutsches Requiem, and a substantial amount of solo piano music.
