Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Trained as a classical musician, Beethoven became one of the most influential composers of all time. His compositional style allowed the rigid rules of the Classical Era to give way to the harmonic freedom of the Romantic Era. As seen in his compositions, Beethoven expanded the use of motivic development and introduced dissonance as a standard in all compositions. His most famous and influential works include nine symphonies, instrumental concertos, and thirty-two piano sonatas.
