Welcome to the Tablet PC Music Project
The Tablet PC is destined to alter the way we approach the teaching and study of music analysis. This website contains much of the analysis created by students at Appalachian State University during a research study which tested the effectiveness of the Tablet PC in the music theory classroom. Funded by the Microsoft Corporation, the results of this study indicate that the integration of the Tablet PC allows students to have a better understanding of musical form and structure. Results also confirm that students are more engaged in a classroom setting while using the Tablet PC for analysis. The student analyses presented on this site include interpretations from both graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University. Each analysis is accompanied by an original performance, recorded by Appalachian State students and faculty. All performances were recorded at the Gilley Recording Studio within the Hayes School of Music.
The analyses highlighted on this site incorporate the works of many different composers and styles. Feel free to browse through the student analyses listed, most of which are found in the Charles Burkhart Anthology. You may print the analysis at any time and use this for your own study or instructional purposes.
Perhaps by advancing music theory instruction using Tablet PC technology, we can bring progress to a tradition-bound discipline. Please feel free to leave a message or join our discussion group for more updates. We will continue to add student analyses as they are completed.
